Adult Education:
Adult Education is a service that adresses reading, writing, and basic math for everyday living. Students work toward getting their GED, a better job, improving reading skills for their children or themselves, or improving their lives with more education.
Reading, Writing and Math: All levels of basic education classes are offered during business and evening hours. Introductory level classes provide an opportunity for adult learners to build a foundation in reading and writing, focusing on phonemic awareness, comprehension, grammar, and sentence structure. Introductory level math classes are also available. Intermediate classes focus on reading comprehension, sentence structure, grammar, as well as revisiting foundational basics and phonemics.

Pre-GED and GED: Classes focus on preparation for the General Educational Diploma exam. Two-hour classes are offered two days a week during the afternoon and evenings. Classes are offered in Wailuku and Hana. Students 16 years and older may enroll in the adult GED classes.

English as a Second Language: Students of all skill levels work to gain a better understanding of the English language, both verbally and in writing, in order to improve work performance, achieve job advancement and/or pursue post-secondary education. Classes are offered during the day and evenings in Wailuku and Lahaina. HMLC is available to create classes that are tailored to specific levels and needs at businesses and community organizations island-wide.
