Hawaiian Outdoor Education (HOE)
Our Hawaiian Outdoor Education program provides a middle school curriculum Monday through Thursday from 8:30-2:00 pm to students ages 11-13 at the Hawaiian Canoe Club located at Kahului Harbor. HOE incorporates literature, writing, field trips, hands-on activities, presentations by cultural and environmental experts, and community service. The HOE interdisciplinary curriculum offers an in-depth examination of Native Hawaiian history, language, culture and values---all within the context of solid academic instruction/activities in the areas of geology, biology, ecology, astronomy, meteorology, genealogy, archaeology, history, language arts, creative writing, reading comprehension, and computer literacy.
HOE includes project-based and experiential education
with a core curriculum to supplement homeschool
studies. Field trips support classroom lessons;
traditional farming provides learning opportunities in
math, science, and social studies; paddling teaches
the value of working together. Through Language Arts,
students perfect a western mode of expression, while
exposure to Hawaiian language gives them insight into
an indigenous people's intimate relationship with the
land.
