GED prep classes are for students 16 and older who test at an 11th grade level or higher, and who demonstrate the skills needed to attend college or enter the working world. Students receive eight hours of academic instruction and four hours of vocational/life skills programming per week. Although the pace of learning varies, some students are ready to take their GED test after three to six months at Hui Malama.
Supplemental Educational Services include:
- One-on-One and Group_Tutoring: Homework help and remedial support for students enrolled in public school (ages 7-19) who need to improve their grades, are testing below grade level, or are behind in their work due to school absences and/or suspension. Tutoring. Tutoring is offered to students who enter Hui Malama below grade level, have special learning needs, or attending other schools but require additional help. Subjects include math, reading and other subjects upon request.
- Vocational/Career Exploration Program. Through partnerships with higher education and various businesses and community organizations, this course enables students to explore work opportunities, create a vocation plan, and develop connections to help pursue their career and personal goals.
Each student will pursue one of three tracks of choice: pursuing post-secondary education and vocational training at the University of Hawaii Maui College or other colleges, employment, or self-employment. Student goals and progress will be tracked through Individualized Learning Plans that are reviewed and updated on a monthly basis.
- Parenting Classes: Parenting classes are offered once a week in the evenings in Wailuku. Parent Project classes address positive parenting techniques specially designed to address the needs of strong-willed and spirited children.
- Co-curricular Programming: Hui Malama offers additional educational and vocational opportunities for our academic students in order to ensure that students develop socially, personally, and culturally.
