On-going participation in community organizations, community outreach and regular organizational assessments have directed us to provide educational and support services that fall into two categories:
Educational Alternatives for students who have opted out or been dismissed from traditional settings, and;
Supplemental Educational Services that assist students in the skills, knowledge and personal development so they are prepared to attain success in traditional educational settings.
Educational Alternative Programs include:
- GED Classes: Prepares students ages 16 and up to obtain a General Education Diploma through passing 5 Core Subject tests. HMLC offers a safe, welcoming, and nurturing environment for students who attend 2-hour classes twice a week in Wailuku. Students complete an Individualized Learning Plan and are supported by educational counselors to participate in a variety of enhancement activities intended to increase academic success, improve employability and encourage positive community involvement. Effectiveness of our programs is evaluated through quarterly and annual assessments of the number of students served, retention rates, and student achievement regarding individual learning plans.
- High School Foundations (HSF): Offers a high-school curriculum for 14 and 15 year olds. Classes are offered from 8:30-12:30 twice a week, Monday through Thursday in Wailuku. Students complete an Individualized Learning Plan and are supported by educational counselors to participate in a variety of enhancement activities intended to increase academic success, improve employability and encourage positive community involvement.
- The Home School Enrichment Program (HEP): (Formally HOE) Provides a middle school curriculum Monday through Friday to students at 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels at the Hui Malama Youth Center located on Main Street in Wailuku.
Home School Enrichment is designed to support the educational growth and development of students who are home schooled. This program is not intended to replace home school but to enrich and enhance the educational curriculum provide at home. Home School is also intended to fill a gap in Maui’s traditional educational system that does not address certain needs of the student.
- Adult Education Classes:
- Reading, Writing and Math: All levels of basic education classes are offered during business and evening hours. Introductory level classes provide an opportunity for adult learners to build a foundation in reading and writing, focusing on phonemic awareness, comprehension, grammar, and sentence structure. Introductory level math classes are also available. Intermediate classes focus on reading comprehension, sentence structure, grammar, as well as revisiting foundational basics and phonemics.
- Pre-GED and GED: Classes focus on preparation for the General Educational Diploma exam. Two-hour classes are offered two days a week during the afternoon and evenings. Classes are offered in Wailuku and Hana.
- English as a Second Language: Students of all skill levels work to gain a better understanding of the English language, both verbally and in writing, in order to improve work performance, achieve job advancement and/or pursue post-secondary education. Classes are offered during the day and evenings in Wailuku and Lahaina. HMLC is available to create classes that are tailored to specific levels and needs at businesses and community organizations island-wide.
Supplemental Educational Services include:
- One-on-One and Group Tutoring: Homework help and remedial support for students enrolled in public school (ages 7-19) who have poor grades, are testing below grade level or are behind in their work due to school absences and/or suspension.
- Parenting Classes: Parenting classes are offered in the evenings in Wailuku. Parent Project classes address positive parenting techniques specially designed to address the needs of strong-willed and spirited children. Parenting through Literacy is a curriculum specially designed to assist parents to understand how to support their children to do well in school. Reading to and with children, helping children (ages 6-17) with homework and working with teachers and schools to improve students experiences are the focus.
- Youth Services: Over the past 8 years, Hui Malama has offered additional educational and vocational opportunities for our academic students in order to ensure that students develop socially, personally and culturally. Our youth service site is located at 1980 Main Street in Wailuku. Youth Service Center activities and programs are driven by Hawaiian values and aimed at addressing all areas of the Lokahi wheel. Our emphasis is resource conservation and sustainability, perpetuation of Hawaiian cultural practices and community service. All of our students participate in prevention programs in the areas of Violence, Teen Pregnancy, Tobacco and Substance Abuse Prevention. We also offer video production certification program in partnership with AKAKU television and a variety of media literacy classes.
Effectiveness of our programs is evaluated through quarterly and annual assessments of the number of students served, retention rates, and student achievement regarding individual Learning Plans. Hui Malama has earned its reputation for excellent service delivery from Federal, State, County, and private funders as well as program auditors who have noted our commitment and ability to provide an integrated continuum of services that is measured by clearly defined outcomes.
We receive funding from Maui County Office of Health and Human Services, State of Hawaii Benefits Education, Services and Division, State of Hawaii Office of Youth Services, State of Hawaii Department of Education, Hawaii Community Foundation, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and The Wilcox Foundation.
In order to make the most of our resources, we partner with several community organizations including the Hawaiian Canoe Club, Maui Economic Opportunities, Inc., Alu Like, Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center, Maui Family Support Services, Maui Youth and Family Services, the Neighborhood Place of Wailuku and Maui Community Correction Center.
