Our History

Our History

Serving Maui Nei since 1973

Thanks to the vision of Diane Ho, Hui Malama Learning Center, or Maui Hui Malama, as it was originally called, was created in 1973 to address the academic needs of local youth. Maui Hui Malama served primarily teen mothers, who dropped out or had been expelled from public school.

For the past 37 years, Hui Malama has grown to provide a wide variety of educational alternatives and academic support services to over 20,000 children, families, and adults in Maui County. Hui Malama’s integrative programs have helped students of various backgrounds to realize academic and personal success and improve their employment opportunities. Hui Malama’s evolution is driven by the ever-growing diversity of academic needs articulated by Maui community members. It has continued to meet the challenge of strengthening our community by providing unique learning opportunities for Maui’s youth and adults for more than three decades.

Today our programs include a full middle school and high school program. We also offer GED prep classes, tutoring services and enrichment programs.

Hui Malama Learning Center is a non-profit, Maui United Way member agency.
