Academic programs
Hui Malama Learning Center provides comprehensive middle school, high school, and GED programs to Maui youth who seek alternatives to traditional school settings. In addition, we offer tutoring and educational enrichment programs to public and private school students grades K-12.
Our academic and co-curricular programs are designed to inspire, nurture, and empower students to pursue career opportunities that contribute to the community and bolster our island’s economy, and to prepare them to be responsible leaders within our community. To do this, we focus on developing the whole person with life skills in addition to academic success, including guidance for students to make healthy choices.

Academics
The Middle School, High School and GED Programs at Hui Malama Learning Center provide students with a positive learning experience while focusing on project-based curricula in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). We assist students to become lifelong learners and critical thinkers by developing essential academic competencies and encouraging appropriate and responsible life choices. Students learn how to access resources, problem-solve, and develop life skills relevant to their community and personal goals.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Our Middle School program provides a middle school curriculum to students at 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels at Hui Malama Learning Center located in Wailuku.
The Middle School program is also intended to fill a gap in Maui’s traditional educational system that does not address all student needs. Many of Maui’s youth do not thrive in the typical classroom setting. They need to be physically, emotionally, and socially engaged in a learning process that is focused on real problems that they know they can fix. Ours is a holistic approach that asks each student to address all aspects of his or her life (emotional, spiritual, family, friends, recreational, physical) in order to improve academic performance.
Our Middle School schedule runs Monday through Thursday, from 8:00am to 3:00pm, and on Friday from 8:30am to 11am. Tutoring services are available and may be required. Summer session options are also available. We follow the Hawaii Department of Education’s school calendar.
HIGH SCHOOL
Hui Malama Learning Center’s High School program provides a high school curriculum to students at high school grade levels at our Wailuku location.
Our High School program is offered to students who want to eventually go into our GED program. At this level the focus is on the core high school subjects of math, science, language arts and social studies, as well as STEM subjects. Students will have the opportunity to explore secondary educational, vocational and employment possibilities.
Students complete an Individualized Learning Plan and are supported by an educational counselor to participate in a variety of enhancement activities intended to increase academic success, improve employability and encourage positive community involvement.

- Pursuing post-secondary education and vocational training at UH Maui College or other 4-year college
- Employment
- Self-employment through building their own small business
In order to develop student interests and expose them to local careers here on Maui, Hui Malama offers many experiences as part of our career development program. The purpose of this program is to introduce our students to local employers in order to interest them in jobs in renewable energy, agriculture and other jobs that sustain and improve our community’s environmental, social, economic and cultural condition.
Students interact with employers and employees from a variety of businesses in four ways:
- Employer Speakers: Employers or their employees describe their business, how it promotes sustainability, their own educational/career path, job opportunities, and what makes employees successful and competitive in their jobs
- Site Tours: Students visit the site to learn more about the particular industry or business, and to observe employees in action
- Job Shadowing: Based on performance and academic/career interests, students are chosen to work in a small group or one-on-one to perform a discrete work activity with employee
- Internship: Students work with an employer or business to gain hands-on experience and build relationships with a potential mentor
Our goal for our students is to have achieved academic success, increased communication skills, improved peer/family relationships, and improved self-confidence as a result of being involved in our Career Development and Employer Mentoring program.
KE OLA PONO
The Ke Ola Pono program is a holistic, values-driven approach that is part of Hui Malama’s Co-Curricular programming. The curriculum emphasizes the cultural value of Lokahi and Pono, which encompass all areas of our life, using the canoe as a metaphor. The flexibility of the curriculum enables us to incorporate unanticipated issues that arise and incorporate a variety of teaching methods to address varying learning styles. In addition, we offer Making Proud Choices prevention curriculum as part of the Ke Ola Pono program.
NA KA `AINA KE `OLA – “With Land, There is Life”
Building on our previous experience and knowledge, we have developed this program to nourish our students and prepare them for a day of learning by providing breakfast and lunch. Our intent is to ensure that each day, students eat the kind of food that best prepares them for learning and school activities. Students participate in planning, preparing, and cleaning up after their meals. Students and staff dine together, offering students daily opportunities to practice table manners, etiquette, and how to carry on pleasant, enjoyable conversations. At the same time, students learn about nutrition, budgeting, impact on the environment and economy in core subject matter classes. Students are also planning, developing and building a school garden in order to supply meal time needs. Students build on their knowledge by visiting local growers, and identifying where locally grown food is sold.
Locally supplied, healthy, whole food is an essential theme that is carried throughout all Hui Malama programs.
SERVICE LEARNING
To create long-lasting, substantive impact on the community, we are committed to contributing our knowledge, skills, and resources. We appreciate and value the individual benefits and rewards gained by an interest and investment in something larger than one’s self. There is an appreciation for all that has come before us and we accept responsibility to prepare and provide for future generations. Service Learning is integrated into Hui Malama curriculum, lessons and activities that all students participate in on a regular basis.
