A total of 5 barrels were painted with this year&#8217;s theme of &#8220;Malama Aina&#8221;. Our students thought of the theme, sketched out and transferred their ideas onto the barrels.]]></description>

<p>A board member wrote: “Great to see you all on the slopes of Haleakala with shovels in hand, dirt under your fingernails and 1000 young natives planted in the ground. Stay tuned to Plant A Wish via their website or FB page&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;it will be fun to see the documentary they are making of their 50 state plant a wish tour.  It is always inspirational to see someone&#8217;s vision in action, and was great to be a part of it.&#8221;</p>

<p>Or join us on <strong>Saturday, November 5,</strong> for the First Annual Native Tree Plant-out Arbor Day event, co-sponsored by <a title="Skyline Eco-Adventures" href="http://www.zipline.com/" target="_blank">Skyline Eco-Adventures</a> and <a title="Plant a Wish" href="http://plantawish.org/" target="_blank">Plant A Wish</a>. Morning ziplining tours, beginning at 8:00 am until 12:00 pm, will again be half price, and all proceeds will benefit local charitable organizations, including Hui Malama. From 12:30 until 3:30 pm, Skyline will be guiding Maui youth groups through the zipline course at no charge. These youth groups will be planting native Hawaiian trees on the grounds of the Haleakala course and learning about how they fit into Hawaii&#8217;s unique history and culture.</p>
<p>Call Skyline Eco-Adventures at 878-8400 to make reservations for either event. Their Haleakala Tour is located 2.5 miles up Crater Road in Kula. <h4>Bank of Hawaii Foundation Announces Three Nonprofits as 2011 Mike Lyons Maui Community Award Recipients</h4>
<p>HONOLULU, HAWAII (May 20, 2011) – The Bank of Hawaii Foundation announced three Maui County nonprofits are the recipients of this year’s Bank of Hawaii Mike Lyons Maui Community Award. The total donation was increased this year to $25,000. Community Clinic of Maui, dba Malama I Ke Ola Helath Center received $5,000, and Hale Mahaolu Akahi, Inc. and <strong>Hui Malama Learning Center</strong> were each awarded $10,000. The checks were presented at a special reception held at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center on May 18.</p>
<p>The award is presented annually by the Bank of Hawaii Foundation in honor of the late, retired Bank of Hawaii Senior Vice President and Maui District Manager Michael H. Lyons II. Lyons was a dedicated community leader and served as a role model throughout his 41-year career with the bank.</p>
<p>Community Clinic of Maui, dba Malama I Ke Ola Health Center, provides health care services for the working poor, uninsured and homeless on Maui.</p>
<p>Hale Mahaolu Akahi provides affordable rental housing plus related facilities and support services for the elderly on Maui.</p>
<p><strong>Hui Malama Learning Center provides educational alternatives by focusing on developing the whole person with life skills experience in addition to academic success.</strong></p>
<p>This is the eighth annual Bank of Hawaii Mike Lyons Maui Community Award presentation. Last year’s recipients were Fun Day Foundation, A Keiki’s Dream; Hale Makua Health Services; Maui County Salvation Army; and Maui Economic Concerns of the Community.</p>
<p>The award is open to any nonprofit 501(c) (3) tax-exempt organization in Maui County. Selection is based on: a) exemplary fulfillment of the organization’s mission; b) the leadership demonstrated by the organization’s executive director and board; and c) the organization’s engagement in one of the following focus areas: community development, education, human services, and arts and culture.</p>
<p><strong>About Mike Lyons</strong><br />
Mike Lyons began his career at Bank of Hawaii in 1961 as a trainee and worked his way up to senior vice president and Maui regional manager, retiring in 2000. Throughout his career, Lyons served on the boards of numerous community groups and was instrumental in founding several nonprofit organizations on Maui. Among his many roles, he served as founder and chairman of the Maui Economic Development Board; governor of District 500 (Hawaii) Rotary International; president of the Maui Chamber of Commerce, Kahului Rotary Club, and the J. Walter Cameron Center; chairman of Maui United Way; and treasurer and board member of the Maui Arts &amp; Cultural Center. Lyons passed away on March 26, 2004.</p>
